WCC Library Guidelines

The collection development process guides the selection, acquisition, maintenance, and retention of materials to support the educational programs of the College, as well as meeting the reading needs of individuals seeking personal or professional growth and enrichment.

Selection Process – Faculty members, students, employees, and community patrons are encouraged to request materials. Acquisitions are based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance of subject matter to the educational programs of the College.
  • Faculty recommendation.
  • Strength of present holdings in the same or similar subject area.
  • Currency and accuracy of information.
  • Authoritativeness of the author.
  • Reputation of the publisher.
  • Price and availability of funds.

Textbooks are not generally purchased by the Library, except in cases where a textbook is the best source of information on a topic. Textbooks currently used in courses taught by the College must be placed on Reserve status for in-library use only.

All acquisitions are subject to final approval by the Head Librarian to maintain a balanced collection.

Weeding Process – Continual assessment, removal, and replacement of materials is practiced to ensure relevancy, accessibility, cost efficiency, and usefulness of print and digital collections and materials. Faculty are consulted in weeding educational subject areas. Materials may be deselected based on the following criteria:

  • Currency
  • Accuracy
  • Physical condition
  • Low usage indicated by circulation data/statistics

Some Library materials, such as classic works, may be retained based on historical value, regardless of lack of use.
